It was narrated that ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr, may Allaah be pleased with them, said: "While we were sitting with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, a man from the people of the desert came in. He was wearing an outer garment of Sijan that is buttoned with silk brocade. He said: "Your man [i.e. the governor] has brought every knight the son of a knight low or said wants to bring every knight the son of a knight low and exalted every shepherd son of a shepherd."

The narrator added: "The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, grabbed the man by his collar and said to him: "Do I not see you wearing the clothes of those who have no sense?"

Then, he, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "When the death of the Messenger of Allah Noah, may Allah exalt his mention, approached, he said to his son: I will narrate to you my bequest; I command you with two things and prohibit you from two things. I command you with ‘La ilaaha ‘illa Allaah’ (‘There is none worthy of worship in truth except Allah) if the seven heavens and the seven earths were placed upon a scale and ‘La ilaaha ‘illa Allaah’ was placed on the other, then ‘La ilaaha ‘illa Allaah’ would be heavier.

If the seven heavens and the seven earths were a closed off circle then ‘La ilaha ‘illa Allaah’ would be able to break it.

The second thing I command you with is Subhana Allaahi wa bihamdihi (Far is Allaah from imperfection and praise is for Him), since it is a supplication for everything, and by it the creation is given its provision. I prohibit you from Shirk (i.e. associating others with Allah, The Almighty, in worship) and pride."

The narrator said: "I asked or someone asked: "O Messenger of Allah, as for Shirk then we know about it, but what is pride? Is it that one of us has good sandals with two good straps?"

The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, answered: "No."

He asked again: "Is it that one of us has good garment to wear?"

He, peace and blessings be upon him, answered: "No."

He asked again: "Is it that one of us has a camel to ride?"

He, peace and blessings be upon him, answered: "No."

He asked again: "Is it that one of us has companions and they sit with him?"

He, peace and blessings be upon him, again answered: "No.

The narrator said: "I asked or someone asked, 'O Messenger of Allah, what is pride then?"'

He, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Ridiculing the truth and belittling the people and reviling them.” (1).

As for As-Sijaan, Ibn Al-Atheer said it is the plural of Saaj which is the green Taylasaan (i.e. pallium) and it was said it is the low-necked garment.

As for 'Ridiculing the truth', it is to take truth lightly and do not adopt it.

As for 'Belittling the people', it is to humiliate them and think low of them.

(1) It was reported by Imam Ahmad, may Allaah have mercy upon him, (6583) the edition of Ar-Risaalah. Shu‘ayb Al-Arna'oot said: "Its Isnaad (i.e. chain of transmission) is Saheeh (authentic) for many people narrated from As-Saq‘ab ibn Zuhayr and Abu Zar‘ah deemed him trustworthy and Ibn Hibbaan stated him in 'Ath-Thiqaat' and Abu Haatim said: Sheikh is not famous; however, its remaining narrators are trustworthy and meet the conditions of Al-Bukhaari and Muslim."

Imam Al-Bukhaari also reported it in Al-Adab Al-Mufrad from Sulaymaan ibn Harb, the sheikh of Ahmad from Hammaad and regarding it Hammaad said: "I do not know it except from ‘Ataa' ibn Yasaar and this doubt from Hammaad does not affect the soundness of the Isnaad because the Hadeeth will be reported in No. (7101) with another Isnaad that attributed to As-Saq‘ab ibn Zuhayr and it implies no doubt with the report of Zayd from ‘Ataa'.

Al-Haafith Ibn Katheer, may Allaah have mercy upon him, reported it in his book At-Taareekh (1/119) from this place of Al-Musnad and said: "It is a Saheeh Isnaad while they did not report it."

It was also reported by Al-Bazzaar (2998) from the route of Wahb ibn Jareer from his father from As-Saq‘ab ibn Zuhayr.

Then Al-Bazzaar reported it (3069) from the route of Muhammad ibn Ishaaq from ‘Amr ibn Dinaar from ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar ibn Al-Khattaab and Ibn Katheer said in his book At-Taareekh (1/119) after reported it from the narration of At-Tabaraani from the route of Muhammad ibn Ishaaq by the stated Isnaad of Al-Bazzaar but from the Hadeeth of Ibn ‘Amr ibn Al-‘Aas, may Allaah be pleased with them. It is apparent that it was narrated by ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr ibn Al-‘Aas, may Allaah be pleased with them, as it was reported by Ahmad and At-Tabaraani.

Al-Haythami reported it completely in Al-Majma‘ (4/219-220) and said: "Ahmad reported it in full and At-Tabaraani reported something like it and added in his narration and I advice you with glorifying Allah (i.e. reciting Subhaan Allah) for it is the worship of all creation and with Takbeer (reciting Allahu Akbar). It was reported by Al-Bazzaar from the Hadeeth of Ibn ‘Umar and the chain of narrators reported by Ahmad are trustworthy.

Moreover, Al-Haythami reported it in divisions in two places (5/133 and 142) and said in the first place: "It was reported by Al-Bazaar and Ahmad in a long Hadeeth that was stated previously in the bequest of Noah, may Allah exalt his mention, among the bequests and the chain of transmission reported by Ahmad are trustworthy and said the same thing in the other place but did not attribute it to Al-Bazzaar.

Then Al-Haythami reported it also from the Hadeeth of ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar ibn Al-Khattaab, may Allaah be pleased with them (10/84) and said: "Al-Bazzaar reported it and it has Muhammad ibn Ishaaq and he is fraudulent but trustworthy and the other remaining narrators meet the conditions of Imam Al-Bukhaari. Al-Haythami then said: This was stated previously from the Hadeeth of ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar ibn Al-Khattaab, may Allaah be pleased with them, in the bequest of Noah, may Allah exalt his mention, as one of the bequests.

We have said: "As if Al-Haythami did not read the opinion adopted by Ibn Katheer, may Allaah have mercy upon him, that the Hadeeth is the Hadeeth of ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr, may Allaah be pleased with them."

It was reported by Al-Al-Bukhaari in Al-Adab Al-Mufrad after the Hadeeth (548) from ‘Abdullah ibn Maslamah and he is Al-Qan‘abi from ‘Abdel Azeez and he is Ad-Daraawirdy from Zayd ibn Aslam from ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr, may Allaah be pleased with them that he said: O Messenger of Allah, is this arrogance?... and the like. We have said that this is an interrupted Isnaad.

His saying: "I command you with ‘La ilaaha ‘illa Allaah’ (‘There is none worthy of worship in truth except Allah) if the seven heavens… will be stated that it is from the words of Nawf Al-Bakaali in the Hadeeth (6750) from Al-Musnad, the edition of Ar-Risaalah publishing house.

Al-Hadeeth is deemed Saheeh by Ibn Katheer in Al-Bidaayah wa An-Nihaayah (1/119) and Ahmad Shaakir in his commentary on Al-Musnad (6583).

Also, Sheykh Al-Albaani, may Allaah have mercy upon him, deemed it Saheeh in Al-Adab Al-Mufrad (548) and in As-Saheehah (134).
