Furthermore, their love, veneration and respect to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, were very clear and need no proof. The best one described the love of the Companions to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was ‘Urwah ibn Mas‘ood Ath-Thaqafi, may Allaah be pleased with him, when he negotiated the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, regarding the treaty of Al-Hudaybiyyah. When he returned to his people, he said, "O people! By Allah, I have been to the kings and to Caesar, Khosrau and An- Najashi, yet I have never seen any of them respected by his courtiers as much as Muhammad is respected by his companions. By Allah, if he spat, the spittle would fall in the hand of one of them (i.e. the Prophet's companions) who would rub it on his face and skin; if he ordered them, they would carry out his order immediately; if he performed ablution, they would struggle to take the remaining water; and when they spoke, they would lower their voices and would not look at his face constantly out of respect."

The Companions, may Allaah be pleased with them, were described while sitting with and listening to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, in an amazing way which was stated in several Hadeeths. Amongst them was the statement of Abu Sa‘eed Al-Khudari, may Allaah be pleased with him: "So all the people kept silent with awe as if birds were sitting on their heads."

It was also narrated that ‘Amr ibn Al-‘Aas, may Allaah be pleased with him, said: "And then no one as or dearer to me than the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and none was more sublime in my eyes than he, Never could I, pluck courage to catch a full glimpse of his face due to its splendour. So if I am asked to describe his features, I cannot do that for I have not eyed him fully."

It was also narrated that when Abu Sufyaan visited his daughter, Um Habibah, may Allaah be pleased with her, in Median, he entered her house and was about to sit down on the mattress of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, she pulled it away. Abu Sufyaan (became surprised) and said: "O my daughter, I do not know whether I was not good enough for the mattress or the mattress was not good enough for me?" She replied: "This is the mattress of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and you are polytheist and impure and thus you could not sit on his mattress."

Due to the great keenness of the companions, may Allaah be pleased with them, on honoring and avoiding causing harm to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, Anas ibn Maalik, may Allaah be pleased with him, said: "We used to knock on the door of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, with our fingernails."

Also, when the saying of Allah, The Almighty:  {O you who have believed, do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet or be loud to him in speech like the loudness of some of you to others, lest your deeds become worthless while you perceive not.} [Quran 49: 2] was revealed, ‘Abdullaah ibn Az-Zubayr, may Allaah be pleased with him, said, "After that, ‘Umar's voice was so low that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, had to ask him to repeat what he said so that he could understand what he was saying to him.''

It was narrated that Thaabit ibn Qays, may Allaah be pleased with him, used to raise his voice above the voice of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. He remained in his house feeling distressed thinking that he is among the dwellers of the Fire until the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, gave him glad tiding of entering Paradise."
